In het academisch jaar 2020-2021 vierde de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam het 140-jarig bestaan met het ‘Kuyperjaar’. Gedurende het jaar vond de online expositie ‘VU-voorwerpen en hun verhalen’ plaats. Deze expositie is nu ook fysiek te zien in de erfgoedvitrine naast de ingang van de UB in het VU-hoofdgebouw. Op 6 september verschijnt het boek bij de expositie: VU-voorwerpen en hun verhalen. 140 jaar erfgoed van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Tijdens het Kuyperjaar vestigden evenementen, lezingen, boeken, en exposities de aandacht op de blijvende betekenis van de belangrijkste VU-stichter Abraham Kuyper. Maar ook de bredere geschiedenis van de VU kwam aan bod. Het idee achter de expositie ‘VU-voorwerpen en hun verhalen’ is om aan de hand van het bewaarde erfgoed de geschiedenis van de Vrije Universiteit voor de hele periode en zo breed mogelijk aan bod te laten komen, zodat een caleidoscopisch beeld van de VU-historie ontstaat.

Uit de erfgoedcollecties van de universiteit is voor elk lustrum uit de geschiedenis een object gekozen dat kenmerkend is, ofwel omdat het uit die tijd stamt, ofwel omdat het verbonden is met een belangrijke gebeurtenis die toen plaatsvond. Gastauteurs reflecteren op de betekenis van het object voor vandaag. Dat maakt het erfgoed tot een brug tussen verleden en heden en het werpt ook de vraag op hoe we ons vandaag tot dit verleden moeten verhouden.

De expositie toont een selectie voorwerpen en citaten uit de online columns die sinds september 2020 gepubliceerd zijn in de online expositie. Het boek verschijnt op 6 september 2021 in zowel een Nederlandse als Engelse versie en wordt uitgegeven door Clue+: Research Institute for Culture, Cognition, History and Heritage van de VU; het is rijk geïllustreerd en bevat een bewerking van alle verhalen uit de expositie, voorafgegaan door een inleiding. De expositie en het boek werden samengesteld door de universiteitshistoricus Ab Flipse en conservator academisch erfgoed Liselotte Neervoort.

Exposition and Publication: VU Objects and their Stories

In the academic year 2020-2021, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam celebrated its 140th anniversary with the ‘Kuyper Year’. The online exhibition ‘VU Objects and their stories’ was visible during the year. Today, this exhibition can also be seen in its physical form, in the heritage showcase next to the entrance of the University Library in the VU Main Building. On 6 September, a book accompanying the exhibition is to be published: VU Objects and their Stories: 140 years of Heritage at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

During the Kuyper Year, events, lectures, books and exhibitions drew attention to the enduring significance of the most important VU founder, Abraham Kuyper. Also, the broader history of VU Amsterdam  was discussed. The idea behind the exhibition is to use the broadness of  VU Amsterdam’s physical heritage in order to present a kaleidoscopic image of its history.

For each five years in the university’s history, we have selected an object from its heritage collections that is characteristic of this period, either because it originates from this era or because it is associated with an important contemporary event. Various guest authors reflect on the significance the object holds today. Thus, heritage is made to serve as a bridge between the past and the present, creating an opportunity for reflection on how to relate to this past.

The exhibition shows a selection of objects and quotes from the columns that have been published in the Online exposition since September 2020. The book, a publication by Clue+: Research Institute for Culture, Cognition, History and Heritage of the VU, is to be published on 6 September 2021. It is richly illustrated and contains especially edited versions of all stories from the exhibition, plus an introduction. The exhibition and the book were both compiled by University Historian Ab Flipse and Curator of Academic Heritage, Liselotte Neervoort.
